Delighted to announce that Philippa Coulthard has been cast as lead character Helen Schlegel in HOWARDS END.

This brand new adaptation is written by written by BAFTA Award Winning (MANCHESTER BY THE SEA), Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award nominated writer (YOU CAN COUNT ON ME) Kenneth Lonergan  and produced by Playground Productions for BBC 1 and Starz (USA).

The novel by E. M. Forster was first published in 1910, and has classic status – encompassing every twist and turn of social conventions, codes of conduct, and personal relationships in turn-of-the-century England.

The story of Howards End revolves around three families in England at the beginning of the 20th century: the pragmatic Wilcoxes, rich capitalists with a fortune made in the Colonies; the empathetic half-German Schlegel siblings (Margaret, Tibby, and Helen), whose cultural pursuits have much in common with the real-life Bloomsbury Group; and the vulnerable Basts, an impoverished young couple from a lower-middle-class background. The idealistically motivated, well read, highly intelligent Schlegel sisters seek to help the struggling Basts, wishing at the same time to rid the Wilcoxes of some of their deep-seated social and economic prejudices.

Both a love story and a tragic depiction of class politics and prejudice, Forster’s novel is one of the most important novels of the 20th Century – feeling more pertinent than ever in the current climate.

Hettie McDonald is on board as  director, Laura Hastings-Smith is producer and other cast members include Hayley Atwell, Matthew MacFadyen, Tracey Ullman and Julia Ormond.
